When asked by our international partners to live stream an interview on board the USS Midway in San Diego, CA, we jumped at the chance. Our live feed was part of an international broadcast involving production teams in the U.K. and Switzerland. With obvious 8- and 9-hour time differences, the crew managed to sync the project together seamlessly. Using the LiveU 600, Blackmagic Cinema Camera, Atomos Shogun recorder, and Unity Comms for the streaming, and we communicated with our international partners via Microsoft Teams.
TOPGUN, Captain Jim DiMatteo
In 1986, Captain DiMatteo followed in the footsteps of his father and brother by joining the US Navy, where he began an unprecedented Naval Aviation career. After extensive combat flight time in Desert Storm, he was recruited into the prestigious TOPGUN Adversary squadron. It was there that Captain DiMatteo accumulated more TOPGUN Adversary flight time than anyone in the history of the US Navy and Marine Corps. He was ultimately named the Commanding Officer of the TOPGUN Adversary squadrons on both coasts, the VFC-13 Saints and VFC-111 Sundowners. While under his command, his squadrons won the Triple Crown of Naval Aviation awards for Operations, Safety and Maintenance—a feat that had never before been attained. After command of his squadrons, Captain DiMatteo was asked to join the headquarters of Naval Aviation in San Diego, California, where he worked for the Commander, Naval Air Forces (CNAF), overseeing the TOPGUN Adversary program. While at CNAF, he also directed one of the most publicly visible programs in Naval Aviation history—a yearlong celebration to honor the 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation in the year 2011.
When he retired after over twenty-five years of service, Captain DiMatteo had amassed over 5,000 hours in 5 different fighter aircraft—F-14 Tomcat, F/A-18 Hornet, A-4 Skyhawk, F-5N Tiger II, and F-16N Viper. He is the only person in Naval Aviation history to have accomplished such a record.
The project was a great success, with another satisfied customer. Thank you to our San Diego team, L.A. team, our U.K. and Switzerland partners…and thank you, TOPGUN, Captain Jim DiMatteo, for your help, dedication and service!
